Climate change affects everyone, so cities have to make sure they facilitate a just transition. The Metropolitan Municipality of Budapest will develop a new climate strategy based on the goals set by the city and the areas it wants to focus on.

A community assembly will discuss these issues and then make proposals to the municipality. The city invited 10,000 randomly-selected citizens to a Climate Assembly with the theme ‘There is a climate emergency – What should Budapest do?” A civic lottery will select 50 participants from among all registered residents who will – with the help of experts and civil society organisations – identify the city’s priorities for its new climate policy. These priorities will then be part of the climate strategy which the General Assembly (the Budapest municipal council) will adopt in October 2020.
