The European Capital of Democracy was delighted to host Dubravka Šuica, Vice President of the European Commission, at our office in Vienna. As Vice President for Democracy and Demography, Šuica’s leadership is particularly relevant to our initiative, and we were grateful for the opportunity to discuss the importance of promoting democracy and civic engagement, the development of democracy technologies, and the fight against disinformation throughout Europe.
During the meeting, Vice President Šuica emphasized the importance of strengthening citizen engagement and youth participationin Europe. She also stressed the links between demography and democracy. Vice President Šuica showed particular interest in the fight against disinformation as another critical area in the defense of democracy. Hence we took the opportunity to familarise her with one of our planned events during the Programme Year of the European Capital of Democracy in Barcelona, called “Truth, Lies and Democracy”, at which Europes’s gamers will combat disinformation and fake news.
We feel very honored that Vice President Šuica took the time to discuss these issues with us and we are grateful for the support of Vice President Šuica and the European Commission in this important work. We look forward to continuing to work for a democratic Europe in the years to come.
